Tall Ships
Through September 25
You've seen them in the movies, tall ships Lady Washington and Hawaiian Chieftain will visit several Ports of call along the Pacific Northwest this season. The tall ships offer dockside tours, public sailing excursions and hands-on living history programs. Dressed in 18th century style clothing, the costumed crew is ready to tell tales of life on the high seas. The brig, Lady Washington embodies American maritime history of the late 1700s and early 1800s. She is a traditionally built replica that has appeared in several movies and television shows. Hawaiian Chieftain has a fascinating history originating in Hawaii. She's a swift topsail ketch that has sailed the Atlantic Ocean and visited Tahiti. July 22-23 Barrel to Keg Relay
Starting at the Harris Bridge Vineyard in Philomath, Oregon, this scenic relay goes through the beautiful back country of the Oregon Coast Range, crosses over the majestic Yaquina Bay Bridge and finishes at Rogue Ales Brewery on Newport's South Beach Marina. Teams of two to seven runners split the 111K (69-mile) distance over 14 legs. Teams of two to seven walkers cover 8 legs for a 51K (35-mile) distance. Solo ultra runners are welcome, too. August 5 7th Annual Amazing Race
Modeled after the popular television show, the Amazing Race will have two person teams solving clues and racing to the finish line. Organizers have designed a series of seven top-secret challenges that will be both mental and physical. A $100 cash prize will be awarded to the team that finishes first from each category. September 23 SOLVE Fall Beach & Riverside Cleanup
The Beach & Riverside Cleanup began in 1984 as "The Plague of Plastics" after Oregonians, Judie Hansen and Eleanor Dye, were inspired to rid the state's beaches of litter. December 26-31 Winter Whale Watch
