Wild for Mushrooms

Article Image If your taste buds tingle at the mere mention of boletes, chanterelles, morels and Shaggy Mane, you'll love the Wild Mushroom Celebration on the Long Beach Peninsula. These are some of the 18 edible mushroom varieties found on the peninsula that will be featured at local inns, restaurants and bed and breakfasts from mid-October through November. October is the usual time to begin harvesting these earthy-flavored fabulous fungi and to dine on the wild mushroom offerings created by local chefs. On October 14 at 7:30pm, The Depot Restaurant in Seaview is serving a four-course wild mushroom dinner paired with five varieties of Walter Dacon wines. Chef/owner Jeff McMahon of Pelicano's in Ilwaco is conducting a wild mushroom cooking class on October 15 at 1pm. On Friday and Saturday, October 21-22, treat yourself to a three-course dinner featuring wild mushrooms at the 42nd Street Cafe in Seaview. Saturday and Sunday breakfast will also include mushroom specials. Also on October 21-23, Boreas Inn in Long Beach will include two nights and two brunches at the Inn. Their multi-course wild mushroom and wine dinner will take place at Pelicano Restaurant and noted professional forager Veronica Williams will be on hand for the inn's Sunday brunch. The Shelburne Inn in Seaview is planning a special wild mushroom dinner on October 28 at 7pm, along with beers and "beer lore" by Charles and Roseanne Finkel of Pike Brewing Company in Seattle. On November 5, Tuscany Cafe in Ilwaco will offer a five-course dinner featuring these wild mycological morsels. The Lost Roo restaurant gives a nod to the celebration by offering wild mushroom specials during the month of October. Reservations are required for all special dinners and they sell out quickly, so book early.
