Sushi and Japanese Cuisine Comes to Cannon Beach

Article ImagePhoto by Gary HayesOctopus sushi at Fishes Sushi & Japanese Cuisine in Cannon Beach. Fishes Sushi & Japanese Cuisine has opened in Cannon Beach. John and Sandy Newman, who are also owners of Newmans at 988, opened Fishes in early December in the downtown location that was previously the home of the restaurant JP's at Cannon Beach.

The concept for Fishes is based on chef John Newman's experience at Silks Restaurant in the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in San Francisco and Fishes Seafood and Steaks in Pacific City. The Newmans brought in sous chef Jason Alldrin, a graduate of the Western Culinary Institute in Portland. Alldrin also brings past experience with Asian cuisine including stints at PF Chang's China Bistro in Portland and Fujimama's Restaurant and Sushi bar on the Big Island of Hawaii.

The Fishes menu includes sushi, sashimi, tempura, teriyaki and Japanese inspired ramen noodle dishes and entrees. I sampled several of the tempura offerings that are lightly coated and seasoned, not encased in thick batter. The tempura scallions were particularly enjoyable and crunchy. Other tempura choices range from avocado and carrot to scallops, lobster and prawns. I also enjoyed the sea weed salad and octopus sushi that is served in two pieces similar to a hand roll. Of several sushi rolls, I particularly enjoyed the spicy vegetable tempura roll.

My next visit, I'll want to sample the entrees that caught my eye, such as Black Cod Miso, Pork Tonkatsu or the half lobster tail. Vegetarians will be pleased with the choices at Fishes including a spicy garlic tofu entree. Asian-inspired desserts on the menu include Ginger Creme Brule, Sake Sorbet and Green Tea Ice Cream.

Diners at Fishes can nibble their way through sushi, sashimi, salads, tempura and appetizer items ranging from $2 to $12 or choose from Ramen noodle dishes and entrees ranging from $12 to $26.

Fishes is located at 240 N Hemlock and the restaurant will initially be open Wednesday through Sunday from 5pm until close. Reservations are recommended. Fishes Sushi & Japanese Cuisine, Cannon Beach, OR (503) 436-TUNA (8862). - by Gary Hayes
