Tempura Needles Roll at Fishes in Cannon Beach, Oregon.
The Tempura Needles Roll at Fishes Sushi and Japanese Cuisine in Cannon Beach is a sushi roll with crunch. Rolled with crab, shrimp, sashimi salmon, avocado and spicy mayo, the nori-wrapped roll is dipped in a light tempura and quick-fried, creating a crisp wrapper, but leaving the contents uncooked. The roll was named for "The Needles," a popular surfing location just south of Cannon Beach's Haystack Rock. Pair this Explorer's Choice Award winning dish with one of the many types of sake available including imports and Oregon-made varieties. Don't expect the variety of sashimi offerings of an urban sushi bar at Fishes, but you will find several choices in sushi and veggie rolls, sashimi and Japanese inspired entrees, all with the touch of James Beard House featured chef John Newman. Fishes is located downtown Cannon Beach, Oregon at 240 N Hemlock Street (503) 436-8862. - GH
