Soft Touch

Artist Karen Sistek paints wildlife and botanical subjects on silk that can be seen at Shearwater Gallery in Seaside.

Article Imagepainting by Karen Sistek Silk is the canvas of choice for Pacific Northwest artist, Karen Sistek who uses steam-set fabric dyes and water-based resists to create her paintings on large sheets of silk. Sistek's work, typically featuring wildlife and botanical subjects, expresses vivid colors and soft textures with an almost watercolor quality. Once painted, steamed and rinsed, the artist mounts her silk paintings on canvas with a protective matte varnish. Sistek's work has been featured at the United States Botanic Garden in Washington D. C., and is now featured at Shearwater Gallery in Seaside. Sistek will be on hand to discuss and demonstrate her technique during the Seaside Art Walk on August 7. Shearwater Gallery is located at 111 Broadway, Suite 11 in Seaside, (503) 738-0328.
