Modernize without Sacrificing Character

This classic beach cottage in Cannon Beach was able to retain its period charm post-remodel, thanks in part to Coaster Construction's focus on staying true to its classic style.

With a little attention paid to the details, it's possible to retain the original character of a classic beach cottage while incorporating a few modern conveniences.

The Northwest Coast's classic beach cottages, many built just after the turn of the century and into the 1930s are a shrinking class. Often these classic beach homes are demolished because they are small and don't accommodate the modern conveniences and open living spaces that today's homeowners are looking for.

When Phil and Kathi Rees were ready to remodel their Cannon Beach cottage, they were able to maintain the original cottage character and create the larger and more open living spaces they desired. With the help of Coaster Construction, many of the vintage details were saved including bead board walls, fir floors and original tongue and groove woodwork.

The new cozy living room showcases a rebuilt river rock fireplace with rough-hewn slab fir mantel that looks like it could be original to the home. An addition to the back of the home made for an open floor plan for the kitchen and dining room. Coaster installed new cabinetry that offers classic vintage details, allowing for conveniences, like a dishwasher, without sacrificing cottage style. Although a full second story with a master suite was added to the Rees' home, and it likely would not be considered for the local cottage tour as it once was, the main floor retains the essence of classic beach cottage style.
