Since the mid-1800s, Seaside has been a popular destination for families wanting to enjoy the scenic beauty of the Pacific Ocean. In 1920, one of Oregon’s most recognizable landmarks, the famous automobile turnaround at the beach was completed and the old wooden boardwalk was replaced with concrete, creating a promenade along the waterfront still in use today. The three-mile prom is a great place to stroll, hike or bike along the waterfront with unspoiled views of the ocean and broad sandy beach. The steady breezes off the ocean are perfect for kite flying, and sandcastle building is always in order. Just a couple blocks off Broadway you'll find the Seaside Aquarium, in operation since 1937 and still a major attraction with its exhibits of marine animals and a family of seals eager to entertain for a fishy treat. Just off the prom a few blocks south of the turnaround is a reconstruction of the Lewis and Clark expedition’s salt making operation they manned during their stay in the area 200 years ago. In a stroll along Broadway, visitors will encounter dozens of shops and restaurants, an arcade, bumper cars and a shopping mall with an old-fashioned indoor carousel. On the east side of the Necanicum River lies the historic Gilbert District with fine old buildings restored and refurbished to house an antique mall, casual and fine dining, a wine bar, art galleries and specialty shops. The Seaside Factory Outlet Center is located just north of downtown Seaside on Highway 101. Seaside offers access to a number of natural and outdoor recreation areas. Just north of downtown Seaside is the Gateway to Discovery and Natural History Center. Short hiking trails offer views of the estuary and the center features exhibits on the natural and cultural history of the area. The Cove, at the south end of Seaside’s beach, is known as one of Oregon’s best surfing locations. Above the Cove looms Tillamook Head, a rainforest covered headland that offers hiking trails including a six-mile hike to Ecola State Park. The Necanicum River offers recreation with kayak and paddleboat rentals. Armed with a fishing license and the proper gear, toss a crab ring into the river from a bridge. |
