Several miles of sandy beach stretch out from the base of Neahkahnie mountain, south past the quaint towns of Manzanita, Nehalem and Wheeler with access to beach, bay and river recreational areas. In Manzanita, Laneda Avenue is lined with shops and restaurants befitting a beach town with class. A mile and a half south at Nehalem, along the banks of the Nehalem River, huge hanging flower baskets at shops along the main street burst with brilliant blooms in spring and summer. Nearby is Nehalem Bay State Park, featuring ocean beaches, bayfront beaches, camping, hiking and bike trails. Wheeler is three miles down Highway 101 on the southern shore of Nehalem Bay. Cast a line or drop a crab net into the water from the public dock. Nehalem Bay and the Nehalem River offer fishing and crabbing, with boats and crab pots available for rent along the shore.
